Looking for a place where you can build or mold yourself into a better you is not as easy as it may seem. One might say, “I don’t fit here”, “I don’t belong here”, or “I shouldn’t be here”. But there’s one thing that I’m pretty much sure of, and that is, me being here.
June 20, 2016 marked our first day as interns at ÆLOGICA. Every single step towards the door of the company was a nerve-racking experience for me at that time. On our first day, we had our orientation and we were able to talk with Steve—the Chief Happiness Officer of ÆLOGICA. Afterwards, we started setting up our development environments.
As a preparation for beginners, the first task given to us was to check on some tutorials regarding Ruby on Rails. I got to try Sublime Text source code editor and it was fantastic! It was also my first time to use Git on a terminal and I found it really amazing!
We were then assigned to look for an open-source project where we can contribute to. I ended up choosing Diaspora—a social networking site where you can post on your profile and broadcast what’s on your mind. It is one of the best places for you and your friends to keep in touch and to know what you are up with.
After browsing through the issues and feature requests on this project, I saw one post that requested to add mention and message buttons to the existing hover cards. These hover cards appear on all instances of clicking a username on the application. I studied every file related to this, and I found out that there were different systems used in the project, such as Handlebars, Backbone, JSON, etc., that are all unfamiliar to me. I read tutorials about these things and it did help. Since the modal is already existing in the profile page, it made my work easier.
My internship program experience at ÆLOGICA was very exciting! Not a day has passed that I wasn’t challenged. I learned so many things—new things! This is one of the best opportunities that was given to me, an opportunity I took without any doubt.
To you, who are reading this, I just want to share my favorite quote: “If you only do what you can do, you will never be more than you are now.” This quote motivates me to do something new and to go beyond my comfort zone. Thank you for this great and unforgettable experience, ÆLOGICA!
